The Convent Lands community group Carrickmacross Co. Monaghan have successfully run several FETAC Level 4 Gardening courses in the past, when the Polytunnel project was developing, along with a FETAC level 5 Landscape and Design course when the Community garden was created.
One tenant who participated in the courses and has now obtained employment working with adults with Intellectual disabilities and is running a QQI (FETAC) Level 4 gardening course through the local ETB, following her positive experience of the courses.
Due to demand from residents and particularly from Carrick Allotments Ltd, which was formed in the community building and which is planning its AGM on 23rd June 2015 at Convent Lands Community Building. We are now recruiting for a basic QQI Level 3 to start at end of June to stimulate interest and move on to a QQI Level 4 in September.
The course will cover all aspects of plant care and maintenance and will provide a practical experience of gardening on the estate.
With funding for materials from the local Agenda 21 grant we plan to create mini orchards, with fruit trees, berries and wildflowers in different areas of the estate.
We hope to encourage increased use by current allotment holders and improved uptake of the allotments by the general public.
