Ninety Years Young Christina bags four goals in Respond Indoor Hurling Tournament

Some residents of Respond Housing Association along with the Waterford Stroke Support Group and Kingfisher Men’s Group took part in a lively indoor hurling tournament in the Cill Barra Sports Centre in Ballybeg on Wednesday morning. The event was organised by Respond and kindly supported by the Waterford Sports Partnership and Waterford GAA. Thirty older adults from the Southeast region picked up their hurleys and tried their hands at Camán Abú.
Camán Abú is effectively a non-contact ground hurling game which is played with a modified hurley and sliotar. The underlying philosophy of Camán Abú is that Gaelic Games should be fun, enjoyable and accessible for all ages. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly ninety year old Respond resident from Wexford, Christina (Chris) Halpin scoring four goals. The participants also took part in a number of other taster games including Boccia, Flisk and Box Hockey.
According to David Phelan, Resident Support Worker, Respond;
“The event was a great success and highlighted the importance of keeping active in older age. Camán Abú has been a big hit with our Go for Life group and has undoubtedly enhanced our resident’s general health and wellbeing”.
Peter Jones, Sports Development Officer, Waterford Sports Partnership, stated that:
“The recommended national physical activity guidelines are not only important from a physical point of view, there are also huge benefits from a social and mental health perspective”.
